In this weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey, bloggers share the books they’re currently reading and what’s coming up on their reading lists. Though I love reading everyone else’s Monday posts, this is the first time I’ve participated! I fear for the length of my TBR list!
I’m currently reading…
In preparation for Nonfiction November, I realized that this is only my second nonfiction book (other than cooking books and memoirs) this year! What have I been thinking?! Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy is about four women who went undercover to spy during the Civil War and my hometown (Richmond, VA) plays a major role in the story. I’m only about a quarter of the way through, but am enjoying it so far. Truth is stranger than fiction – what these women did during the Civil War defies the imagination!

As a result of my Top Ten Authors I Need to Read More From post, I was told that I MUST listen to David Sedaris on audio, rather than read his books. I’m about halfway through and the stories are funny (as promised!). I particularly loved the one about Sedaris’ NYC visitor from Greensboro, NC…hilarious and so spot-on about NYC tourists!

Next up for me is…
This mystery about two mothers teaming up to find their missing sons during the North Dakota oil boom has been getting lots of attention from fellow bloggers. And, Tara from Running N Reading mentioned that it was “amazing” in a recent Weekend Update post, which moved this ARC to the top of my list!

And this one….
Ever since reading The Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson, I’ve been intrigued by life in North Korea. While I didn’t actually like The Orphan Master’s Son, one part about it I did enjoy was getting a glimpse into the life of North Korean ordinary citizens. Things were so backward in North Korea that I actually forgot I was reading about present day until the mention of an ATM machine in South Korea jarred me back to reality. Ever since then, I’ve wanted to read some nonfiction about life under Dear Leader. And, Nonfiction November is giving me the perfect opportunity to do just that!

Sarah, I’m so excited to hear that you are enjoying Liar Temptress Soldier Spy; I thought it sounded really good, when I first heard about it, and I may have to work that in to my TBR list! I’m also thrilled that you are laughing to David Sedaris on audio; next, try Naked – augh! So good! I’m almost finished with The Missing Place – wow. Can’t wait to see what you think! Thank you for the mention in your post, and I hope you had a great weekend!
I’ll try Naked next – I like running to the short essays…fits my attention span when listening to a book! Seems I have trouble keeping track of complicated plots when I’m listening vs. reading 🙂 Another post on that coming soon!
Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy has been tempting me, too!
It’s proving to be a smoke and mirrors book…not a war book, which I love! And the anecdotes about these women about the war in general are thoroughly entertaining!
Liar Temptress Soldier Spy is one I NEED to get to. It’s right up my alley, I just know it. 😀
I’m reading The Underground Girls of Kabul right now in anticipation of Nonfiction November. I’m looking forward to digging into more nonfiction books, they really are my favorite sort.
Have a great week!
In getting my list together for nonfiction november, I realized my current read is only my second real nonfiction of the year (excluding memoirs and cooking books)…this is so unlike me and I was horrified by my behavior! How did I let this happen?!
Nice book choices, Sarah. Good luck with your November challenge!
I’ve been wanting to read The Missing Place…enjoy your books, and thanks for visiting my blog.
Welcome to Monday!! I usually participate but not always. I keep a rolling list, stack, gr order of what’s coming up next by pub date etc but I always have too much to read. Ha ha. Have a good week.
I absolutely always have too much to read! That’s why I need to be better about DNFing books – it’s going to be a 2015 goal.
Well, welcome to It’s Monday!
So I couldn’t wait to read Without You, There is No Us–which I first heard about on your blog last week! I went ahead and picked up a copy and then read it over the read-a-thon weekend. I enjoyed it, although it’s frustrating how little info the author had about what was going on in North Korea anywhere except at the university where she was teaching (although, obviously she couldn’t have gotten any more info). Such an unbelievably closed society. Very interesting read, and not too long. I guess I should’ve saved it for Nonfiction November . . . but I didn’t know that was a thing! Oops. 🙂
I so agree with those who recommend to listen to David’s books.
I loved Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy so I’ll be excited to read your review. Thanks for joining in on Nonfiction November! 🙂
