Weekend Cooking: Doorstep Oysters from The Lobster Place

Weekend Cooking, Cooking books, food books

This post is part of fellow book blogger, Beth Fish Reads‘, weekly meme (a “community” blog post, for all those non-bloggers out there) called Weekend Cooking.

One of my favorite things about living in NYC was the easy availability of any food you wanted, no matter how unconventional. I especially loved the selection of fresh seafood that we got from our neighborhood Whole Foods, Farmer’s Market, and nearby seafood stores.

When we moved to the suburbs, we found it much more difficult to find a wide selection of fresh seafood. We ended up getting all our seafood from our local Farmer’s Market, but it’s only on Saturdays (not frequent enough for people that eat seafood multiple times a week)!

So, my husband and I were beyond excited to have the opportunity to be “guinea pigs” for the pre-launch testing of NYC-based seafood purveyor, The Lobster Place‘s, e-commerce business!

The Lobster Place sells wholesale seafood and maintains a retail storefront and restaurant in NYC’s Chelsea Market. And now, they sell seafood “kits” (think Fish of the Month Club, Raw Oyster Sampler, Live Lobster Kit, Stovetop Clambake, etc.) via overnight delivery! What a treat for seafood lovers without easy access to fresh seafood!

If you regularly read my Weekend Cooking posts, you know I have a household of seafood lovers (well, my eighteen month old isn’t there quite yet, but we’re hopeful!). And, you also know we especially love oysters (even my 4 year old!). So, we were psyched to try the Oyster Sampler Kit.

Lobster Place Oyster Sampler Kit

It came with three varieties of raw oysters (two East Coast and one West Coast, which taste quite different!), two dipping sauces, a bottle of hot sauce, a lemon, and even an oyster knife. Don’t worry, there are instructions for how to use the knife to “shuck” your oysters…

Please excuse the presentation of our oysters…we were hungry!

The oysters were extremely fresh and tasted like the ocean. The East Coast varieties were especially briny (yum!) and the West Coast versions were nice and plump. My husband and I were in heaven and can’t wait to try some of the other kits.

Wow!! What an awesome program. We can get fresh fish — flown in daily — from Wegman’s, but what a great service for the landlocked.

I think this is part of the reason why we don’t eat a lot of seafood–it’s hard to get it fresh in Dallas! This sounds like a great way to get yummy seafood for your family!

  9. Oh I love seafood, especially oysters, crab and lobster. We grew up on the East Coast and loved how fresh everything was. We also loved catching our food. Crabbing all day, than coming home and cooking them up was divine. We live in the midwest now and while the beef is good the seafood is not..so this appeals to me!

I feel ya – I grew up going to the Chesapeake Bay all the time and eating crabs right out of the water! Though I’m still on the East Coast, I was used to easy seafood access right outside my door in NYC and now it’s a bit more difficult now that I’m in the suburbs.

Thanks for stopping by! And – I didn’t realize you’d had the mug and books graphic for a year! I’ve just started paying a lot more attention to different elements of everyone’s blogs because I’m working on a redesign for December!

  10. What a fun idea! I’m guessing it will be a very long time before this makes it to Missouri.
