It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? (2/16/15)

It's Monday What Are You Reading

This week, I’m linking up with Sheila at Book Journey for It’s Monday, What Are You Reading?

I’d hoped to get through The Half Brother and A Touch of Stardust last week, but I didn’t get much reading done. Hopefully, this week will be better on the reading front. I kind of need for it to be because I’ve got some chunksters on the horizon!

I just finished reading…

The Half Brother, Holly Lecraw

The Half Brother by Holly LeCraw (February 17, 2015)
“A passionate, provocative story of complex family bonds and the search for identity set within the ivy-covered walls of a New England boarding school.” (Goodreads) I wanted to love this one (and thought I would in the early stages), but ended up liking it just fine. I think the marketing blurb did it a disservice by divulging too many plot details, which is starting to become a pet peeve of mine.

I’m currently reading…

A Touch of Stardust, Kate Alcott

A Touch of Stardust by Kate Alcott (February 17, 2015)
“A novel that takes you behind-the-scenes of the filming of “Gone with the Wind”, while turning the spotlight on the passionate romance between its dashing leading man, Clark Gable, and the blithe, free-spirited actress, Carole Lombard.” (Goodreads) A quarter of the way through, this is proving to be a light, fun read about 1930’s Hollywood. And, possibly clothed to what I was expecting from Stewart O’Nan’s West of Sunset.

Next up are…two March 10 releases

Dead Wake, A Little Life

Dead Wake by Erik Larson (March 10, 2015)
The true story of the World War I era sinking of the Lusitania, a ritzy ocean liner sailing from New York to Liverpool. Larson (author of The Devil in the White City and In the Garden of Beasts) is the master of nonfiction that reads like fiction and Larson fans have no doubt been anxiously awaiting his latest book. I also included it on a recent Top 10 Nonfiction Books I Want to Read list.

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara (March 10, 2015)
Shannon at River City Reading got me interested in this “epic about love and friendship in the twenty-first century that goes into some of the darkest places fiction has ever traveled and yet somehow improbably breaks through into the light.” It will be my first chunkster (736 pages) of the year.

Oh fun!! I’m almost done with it now and it’s a light, entertaining, easy book (sometimes this kind of book is exactly what you need!). I’m enjoying it.

  6. Hope you end up loving A Little Life! It totally packs a punch and requires some devotion, but it’s just a fantastic piece of fiction.

I hope I love it – I’m dying for another novel with gorgeous writing ever since My Sunshine Away, which has given me somewhat of a book hangover. I’m excited for Dead Wake too, but I know that will be a different kind of story. Enjoy your freezing trip!

  7. I agree with you 100% about the marketing blurb for The Half Brother — so annoying when too much of the plot is revealed. I’m glad I didn’t read much about it before I started. This seems to be happening more and more often. I’m really enjoying Dead Wake!

So glad I’m not alone on this one! It’s such a shame because I feel like it could have been a great book! And – I do feel like I’m seeing that more and more lately. I’m trying to read the blurbs months in advance (when I request the books) and then not look at them again until I read the book. Worked for me with My Sunshine Away.

I am quite behind on my reading but trying to start the very daunting Wolf Hall – hopefully I get into it! Looks like two great books coming up for you 😀

I couldn’t get into Wolf Hall – ended up abandoning it at about 300 pages. I thought the storytelling was really convoluted and lots of characters had the same names! I know a lot of people loved it, though. Good luck!

I recently read a book about the liner featured in Dead Wake called The Last Empress, which was fiction, so I might just have to pick this one up to do a compare and contrast. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
