It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? (9/21/15)

Hosted by Sheila at Book Journey.

Lots of tech stuff going on with the blog last week…some good and some frustrating:

  • I switched from Feedburner’s email subscription service to MadMimi, which will enable me to send weekly updates. If you’re interested in getting weekly updates via email, sign up at the bottom of this post!
  • And, I have to quickly plug MadMimi‘s tech support…they were amazing and I, for once, didn’t feel like I was stranded on a tech iceberg all alone!
  • Ever since I upgraded to WordPress 4.3, I’ve been mired in blog technology hell (all kinds of issues including a broken RSS feed). I’ve learned a ton since I started blogging, but I still feel way behind. So, I’m considering a move (from Fatcow) to a new host that provides more tech support (Nose Graze). Does anyone have any host-switching experiences to share? Has anyone heard anything about Nose Graze‘s hosting services?

On to the fun stuff…we finally finished watching Bloodline on Netflix. The ending petered out a bit, but I was still pretty into it (though, my husband was not). I’m so curious where they can possibly take Season 2! We’re considering Narcos next…anything else we should consider?

I finished reading…

Not on Fire But Burning, Greg Hrbek

Not on Fire, But Burning
by Greg Hrbek (September 22, 2015)
Totally confounding. I loved parts of this novel, but a few big elements didn’t work for me. Review to come.

I’m currently reading…

A Place We Knew Well, Susan Carol McCarthy

A Place We Knew Well
by Susan Carol McCarthy (September 28, 2015)
I’m almost halfway through this novel about a family living near McCoy Air Force Base near Orlando, Florida during the Cuban Missile Crisis and was just about to DNF…but, things just took an intriguing turn. So, I’ll stick with it a bit longer.

Next up are…

Did You Ever Have A Family, Girl Waits with Gun

Did You Ever Have A Family
by Bill Clegg (September 8, 2015)
I got a copy of this debut novel about a family tragedy at BEA, but decided to wait until I could get the Kindle version to read it. Since then, every single review I’ve read has been glowing, almost making me nervous it isn’t going to live up to the hype! Fingers crossed…

Girl Waits With Gun by Amy Stewart (September 1, 2015)
I love fiction based on real people and I hear this one about “one of the nation’s first female deputy sheriffs” is a fun romp. And, I hear a fun romp might be what I need following Did You Ever Have A Family.

  1. Yuck, sorry to hear about the tech issues. I switched hosts over the summer and it was really easy, but I don’t know much about Nose Graze’s hosting. And it’s so hard to pick on Netflix – there’s so much! We love House of Cards, Black Mirror and Peaky Blinders.

Glad to hear that about switching hosts! I watched the first episode of House of Cards a few weeks ago and liked it…that will definitely make it into the line-up at some point! I’ll check out the other two…haven’t heard of either.

I tend to go pretty basic with my blog – Blogger from Google. I haven’t had tech issues and don’t want any! Intriguing selection of books this week. All are new to me. Come see my reading week here. Happy reading!

  3. Love the cover of A Place We Knew Well… wonder if the plot twist will be enough to get you to the end of it though. Did You Ever Have a Family is up next for me, too. I’ll start it later this week – as soon as I finish Elena Ferrante’s The Story of the Lost Child.

It definitely piqued my curiosity, but hasn’t really gone anywhere since (I’m now at 60%). Grr…

I recently finished Did You Ever Have a Family, and I, too, sang its praises. Hope you enjoy!

So glad to hear you loved Did You Ever Have A Family! And, from what I’m hearing about both books, Girl Waits With Gun will make a nice follow-up to Family.

I was so close to requesting A Place We Knew Well but that time period just isn’t my favorite. I’m very curious to hear how it goes for you after the twist!

I normally do love that time period, but it’s just not working for me here. The intriguing turn has kind of petered out, but I’m 60% done so will probably finish anyway.

I just started Did You Ever Have a Family, I think it’s going to be gut wrenching, but oh so good. Have a good week!

That’s what I’m hearing about Family! And…neither am I! Nor do I have the time to spend digging into all the tech stuff.

I have not heard of Nose Graze’s hosting services. I use Bluehost and love them to pieces.

Did You Ever Have a Family has been popping up all over the place! I hope it does stay true to the hype for you!

    Have a great week!

I’ve heard really good things about Bluehost as well…do they have pretty comprehensive tech support?

I think so. Honestly, I have had no problems. What few I have had, I tweeted about them and someone responded to me within a few minutes.

  8. MadMimi sounds fun.

Nothing to say about hosts, but I know Nose Graze is an amazing blogger.

Love the cover on Girl Waits With Gun.

ENJOY your reading week. Great to hear about good tech support from MadMimi.

  9. That’s too bad about the blog/Wordpress/hosting issues. 🙁 I didn’t even know that Nosegraze had a hosting server. I use Bluehost and the tech support is awesome, although this year, my blog seemed to be down a few times because of server issues. That’s never happened before, so I’m not sure what happened this year. I hope you find what you’re looking for.

Sorry to hear that about Not on Fire but Burning. I expected it to be phenomenal.

I’ve heard a lot of people using Bluehost…I’m going to check them out too. But don’t like that their server was down a couple times this year! And – I have a feeling a lot of people will think Not on Fire, But Burning is phenomenal…I’m pretty much expecting to be a loner on this one! And – it’s pretty rare that parallel worlds work for me. I’ll be interested to see what others think.

  10. Sarah, you’ve got some good looking titles in the line up and I’m really glad to hear that A Place We Knew Well has turned around for you; I thought that one had great potential! I can’t help you with the question of switching hosting services; I’ve been with Bluehost from the beginning. I am a little confounded by the ending of Bloodline, as well; I’ll be interested to see where things go from here. As you already know, we love Narcos; a friend recently told me to slow down because she’s really struggling with the withdrawals now – ha!

I just feel like the ending was kind of like “really, that’s it?”. But, I’m still into it and will watch season 2.

A Place We Knew Well – that intriguing turn kind of petered out a bit. But, I’m still going to finish it since I’m already 70% done and the book is only 270 some pages.
