It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? (1/25/16)

Hosted by The Book Date.

Whew – last week was a bear! I had pretty bad cold with sinus pain…bad enough where I actually went to the doctor. I spent the first part of the week unable to focus on anything more mentally taxing than The Bachelor and bedtime reading was through a NyQuil-fueled fog. So…I haven’t made much progress since last week.

We got over 2 feet of snow on Saturday, which came with really high winds. But, the kids did manage to get out for an hour or so. Yesterday was much calmer and, after my son’s 5th birthday party in the morning, we got in some great sledding in the afternoon.

I finished reading…

Youngblood, Matt Gallagher

Youngblood
by Matt Gallagher (February 2, 2016)
For awhile, I felt like I was working my way through this debut (this could be attributed to my cold/sinus issue and lots of NyQuil)…and kind of enjoying it (but just kind of)…then, I really got into it towards the last half/quarter and flew through the end. Review to come.

I’m currently reading…

Umm…nothing? For real. I just finished Youngblood on Saturday and have been flailing around trying to find something that sticks since then. You know what definitely didn’t stick? Wreck and Order. I don’t even know what to say about it other than UGH…I made it to the 2% mark before I’d had enough. Yep, 2%.

Upcoming reading plans…

I’m really not sure, but possibly one of these…or something free range.

Liar, Flight of Dreams

Liar by Rob Roberge (February 9, 2016)
This memoir by a novelist who is diagnosed with a memory-eroding disease was blurbed by Dan Marshall, author of Home is Burning (another memoir I really enjoyed last year).

Flight of Dreams by Ariel Lawhon (February 23, 2016)
Ariel Lawhon’s debut (The Wife, The Maid, and The Mistress) was my favorite debut of 2014, so I’ve been anticipating her sophomore effort about the flight of the Hindenberg in 1937.

  3. Sorry to hear you’ve been sick and I hope you’re able to dig out from all that snow today. I’m looking forward to Flight of Dream, too… loved The Wife, the Maid, and the Mistress!!

Luckily, our town is amazing at snow removal, so everything was pretty much back to normal today!

  4. Hope you feel better soon and find something to read you can get into!

  5. Glad you’re starting to feel better! Sinus stuff can really take it out of a person. Ooohh sledding! SO FUN. Although is it as fun when you’re the parent dragging the sled and your kid UP the hill? I guess I’ll find out soon enough 🙂 Hope you can find a book that sticks this week.

Haha – yes! The uphill is definitely a lot less fun…and takes way more time than the downhill. We did find a smaller hill that my little ones could go down alone and I just waited at the top. You will definitely be all too familiar with this stuff soon enough!

I’m looking forward to reading Flight Of Dreams. Just the whole idea sounds so very interesting. Sorry about your cold/sinus illness. I hate those and seem to get at least one every winter. Glad the birthday party went well and sledding sounds like fun for the kids. Have a better week, Sarah!

  8. I hope you feel better soon. I had a sinus headache the am (I think from the heat in the house being on), but it wasn’t bad enough for a Dr. appointment – just skipped exercising (LOL). Happy Birthday to your son! I just started Flight of Dreams. I will look forward to reading your review.

  9. TWO PERCENT!! Hahaha! I love it, Sarah! Good for you! There’s no sense in wasting time when you already know it’s just NOT going to work out. I hate to hear that you were not feeling well; hope things clear up, and I don’t just mean the snow. Ugh…can you get out of the house yet?

I’d also had Catherine’s assurances that it doesn’t get better, so it was an easy decision! And – yes – we’re out and schools were in session today! My town is pretty amazing at snow removal…the last 2 years have sadly given us a ton of practice!

  10. Flight of Dreams looks interesting, I know what you mean about figuring out what to read next, however I am getting my ARC’s done first. I hope this week is a better reading week for you.

That’s what I’m trying to do also – then some free range books! Too much choice can sometimes get overwhelming!

I hope you are feeling better! This time of year is so tough. I have had a cold for the past two weeks that I cannot shake, and I have even gone to the doctor to make sure it is not anything else.

Definitely read Ariel’s newest. It is fabulous!!!

I’ve been sick too. It sucks. Somehow I could read. Read Beside Myself by Ann Morgan (author of The World Between Two Covers.) So good. Now, for My Big Fat Reading Project, I am reading Sex and the Single Girl, by Helen Gurley Brown. It is way better than I thought it would be. Also I saw The Age of Adaline last night. It is wonderful!

  15. 2% has got to be some kind of record, right?!

Often times when I’m in between books I feel a little lost, but it’s good to not always have your head in a book and take a breather. I hope whatever you read proves to be a good read.

I hope you feel better soon!

Haha – definitely a record for me! To be fair though, I did have another blogger I trust tell me that it does not get any better, so I was comfortable making such a quick decision. Otherwise, I probably would have given it more of a shot.

  16. I’m sorry you haven’t been feeling well. 🙁 I hope you’re all better soon. I wanted your 2 ft of snow down here!! The storm seemed to roll over us on Friday, but we had a good little covering on Wednesday, and I managed to get a one day work week out of it, so I’m still happy. Liar really looks interesting, but I think I would go with Flight of Dreams, especially after Wreck and Order was a 2% DNF. Wow, 2%!

I put Liar aside at 26%…there were some great lines, but got a little sick of reading about his antics while drunk/high. On to Flight of Dreams now.

  18. If you need a book to read, how about It Was Me All Along? It’s my blog book club book for February. I’d love your input! I bet the author would as well..

  19. Oh yuck to being sick! I’ve heard so many similar things about Wreck and Order…it almost makes me curious enough to give it a try (I’m a glutton for punishment).
