It’s Monday, What Are You Reading? (3/6/17)

Hosted by The Book Date.

I followed up one dysfunctional family with an even more dysfunctional one in last week’s reading…then moved on to dysfunctional neighbors. But, my sizzling reading streak is still going strong…fingers crossed it continues!

If you’re interested in signing up for Book of the Month Club, the March selections are fantastic (they include 2 of my favorite books I read in February)! Selections are due TODAY at 7 pm EST.

I finished reading…

The Roanoke Girls, Amy Engel

The Roanoke Girls by Amy Engel (March 7, 2017)
This is the kind of book that I was almost embarrassed to be reading, but also could not put down. The premise is a bit preposterous, but I had to find out what was going to happen with quite possibly the most demented family I’ve come across in fiction (and that’s saying a lot). PS – that premise is super creepy and could be a huge turn-off for some people.

I’m currently reading…

Woman Next Door, Yewande Omotoso

The Woman Next Door by Yewande Omotoso (February 7, 2017)
I’m 65% through this U.S. debut novel about two next door neighbors in South Africa that hate each other and it’s full of the snarky humor I love.

Upcoming reading plans…

Fall of Lisa Bellow, Susan Perabo

The Fall of Lisa Bellow
by Susan Perabo (March 14, 2017)
I loved Susan Perabo’s short story collection, Why They Run the Way They Do (my review), and have been anticipating her debut novel. It’s about the girl who is left behind when a classmate is abducted.

I was reading…

One Year Ago: Pat Conroy had just passed away and I’d fittingly just finished reading another Southern novel.

Two Years Ago: I was trying to cover from A Little Life with a YA novel (it didn’t work).

How was your reading week?

  1. Oh boy! Now you’ve got me wanting to take a week off work to read all these books.

Right now I’m reading my running book club selection: Your pace or mine. It’s really cute!

  2. Looks like we had similar feelings about The Roanoke Girls – fun, in a very creepy way. I read a sample of The Woman Next Door a couple weeks ago. It was too short for me to tell if I’d like it!

It took me weeks to recover from A Little Life. (I’m still not sure I’m over it!)

I’ve got THE ROANOKE GIRLS coming up soon-ish. I’m pretty sure I know the ‘issue’, though I’ve not gone out of my way to figure it out. I also have THE FALL OF LISA BELLOW and want to try it soon. I finished THE WIDOW’S HOUSE yesterday by Carol Goodman. Very, very Gothic. Loved it.

Haha – yep – I heard about the issue before starting it, but knowing that going in doesn’t ruin the story.

Oooh, The Woman Next Door sounds fabulous! I’ve not seen this one before, Sarah, so thanks for the heads up. I’m about halfway through The Fall of Lisa Bellow but, after I’d already written my blog post last night, it took an interesting little turn; curious to see what’s going to happen next!

  10. I want to delve into that dysfunction in The Roanoke Girls but have to wait a few books. Lisa Bellows is on my list, too, but I have no idea when it will happen. And…thank you ever so much for putting another on my list. The Woman Next Door is new to me, but you make it sound so appealing!

  11. Hey hey! We’re reading twins! I started reading The Woman Next Door this weekend but really got into it today, and I’m loving it so far. The humor is great, the social commentary is great, I’m all about it.
