It’s the last week of summer and I’m bummed. It flew by way too fast and I feel like there’s more beach and pool still in me. Alas. At least we get buzzy Fall book releases and college football to make up for it!
I finished reading…
Dear Mr. M by Herman Koch (September 6, 2016)
Dear Mr. M got those big, buzzy Fall books I mentioned off on the right foot! One of my favorite books of the year so far and exactly what you’d expect from Herman Koch. Review to come.

I’m currently reading…
American Heiress by Jeffrey Toobin (August 2, 2016)
I’m almost finished with this account of the Patty Hearst kidnapping and there is SO much more to it than I’d known going in. It’s a crazy one and kind of strikes me as the OJ Simpson case of the 1970’s.

Upcoming reading plans…
Loner by Teddy Wayne (September 13, 2016)
I wasn’t a huge fan of Wayne’s The Love Song of Jonny Valentine, but his latest novel takes place at Harvard and I’m a sucker for campus novels, so I’m going to give it a shot.
How was your reading week?
Ha! I’m soooooo happy summer is over. I really hate the heat. 🙂 I have that Toobin book on my list … hope I get to it soon.
Haha! I think I’ve been so traumatized by the past few NY winters that I’ll take 95 degree heat for as long as possible in exchange for less snow.
I’m looking forward to Loner, too, but I really liked Jonny Valentine – hope it works out for both of us 😉
I’m almost finished Loner and it ended up being pretty different than I expected. Through 90%, I like it a ton more than Jonny Valentine 🙂
I’ve been seeing American Heiress around a lot. I remember when the whole thing was on the news. I hope you enjoy it. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
The whole media circus around it reminds me of the OJ trial during my childhood!
That’s a shame your summer is over, I am happy as our winter is over! I hope you have some nice fall books coming your way. The American Heiress book looks like a book I would enjoy, I’m putting it on my wishlist. Thanks for sharing and happy reading.

Where are you based that you’re finishing up with winter?! I finished Heiress and it was really fascinating!
Hi Sarah, I am so glad to hear that you finished and found The American Heiress fascinating, must find myself a copy soon. I am from Perth Western Australia. First day of Spring for us tomorrow!
Have a great week!
Amanda
I’m jealous! I love Australia – lived there for 6 months around the time of the 2000 Olympics, but sadly never made it to the West coast.
American Heiress sounds promising. I hadn’t heard about Loner — thanks for alerting me! I really liked The Love Song of Jonny Valentine so will check it out. Plus, I too enjoy a campus novel and have some familiarity with the Harvard campus (as a visitor not a student). Every description of Koch’s The Dinner has turned me off so I’ve never read anything by him. I’m eager to read more about Dear Mr. M.
I feel like Koch has a very distinct style that people tend to either love or hate…kind of like cilantro! And, I liked Loner a ton more than I liked Jonny Valentine!
Man, oh, man! I want Dear Mr. M and American Heiress! I think summer will be around here for a while but I am excited about college football!
We’re super excited for college football in our house too! Who’s your team?
The Hokies! We’ve got a new coach this year so we’re a little nervous.
Oh yes – I remember that now! I’m UVA 🙂 And we also have a new coach but were beyond terrible, so have nowhere to go but up.
Oh I so want to read American Heiress!
It was pretty fascinating!
Loner is on my radar too, so I’m glad you’ll be vetting it for me 🙂
I’m almost done vetting…10% more to go! I’ll let you know…I will say that it grew on me more and more the farther I read.
I’ve seen the Toobin pop up on a lot of blogs. I like the guy–I’ve seen him frequently on TV–and I’d love to read this book, if I ever find the time!
I had no idea he was such a TV presence…I’ll have to check him out!
Unlike you, I’m looking forward to cooler weather. It looks like you’ve been reading some great books lately. Have a great week Sarah.
I think the past few NY winters traumatized me 🙁
I really liked American Heiress and I can’t wait to read Mr. M. Great picks this week. Happy Reading!
Glad you liked it! And hope you get to Dear Mr. M…it was really great if you like Koch’s style!
You’re bummed summer is over, and I’m bummed it’s about to start. Would you like to homeswap for the next six months? You can experience a delightful (depending on who you talk to) Australian summer.
Umm….YES! Australia is just about my favorite place on earth! I lived there for 6 months during the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Where in Australia do you live?
American Heiress sounds interesting. I grew up in the 70s and remember the publicity surrounding the case vividly.
I was too young, but the way it was described in the book reminded me of the OJ trial, which was the big crime story of my childhood.
