Plot Summary of Charlie Wilson’s War:
The true story of Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson’s and CIA Agent Gust Avrakotos’ partnership to covertly fund the Afghani Mujahideen in their fight against the Soviet Union in the 1980′s.
My Thoughts on Charlie Wilson’s War:
I learned so much about this piece of history and loved how relevant it is as a precursor to the current Islamic terrorist threat.
But, the best part is the characters. Charlie Wilson is like the Chuck Bass of the U.S. House of Representatives – and Charlie Wilson’s War definitely covers his personal exploits. And then you’ve got Gust, the CIA agent in charge of the American operation to assist the Mujahideen – his dialogue alone makes this book worth reading!
“Well, that’s because [CIA Station Chief] Harold Holt is a tool. He’s a cake-eater, he’s a clown, he’s a bad station chief, and I don’t like to cast aspersions on a guy, but he’s going to get us all killed.”
Sometimes truth is better than fiction – you couldn’t make these people up!
Charlie Wilson’s War is one of those books that makes history so compelling that schools should just assign it as required reading instead of using a mind-numbing text book. And, it’s on my Books for Guys list.
