Plot Summary of Up Country:
Retired Army Officer Paul Brenner (the hero from The General’s Daughter) returns to Vietnam to find the one witness to a murder that occurred during the Tet Offensive.
My Thoughts on Up Country:
For those that don’t know, Nelson DeMille is one of my favorite authors and my number one source for past-paced thrillers. He specializes in terrorism and has an uncanny ability to address potential scenarios that feel shockingly real.
Up Country contains the trademark suspense and the salty, sarcastic dialogue of a DeMille thriller. But, the setting in Vietnam and Brenner’s flashbacks/memories of the war added an educational element for me that differentiated Up Country from his other books.
I do have to say that when I read this book a few years ago, I never realized it was 880 pages long!! I guess that’s a good thing since the only good kind of 880 page book is the kind where you don’t realize it’s 880 pages!
Up Country is on my Books for Guys and Time to Kill lists.
I read this one some 10 years ago. My favorite DeMille novels are the ones featuring John Corey.
I’m a huge John Corey fan as well!
I am not familiar with DeMille. This sounds interesting. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
880 pages?!? Whew! Definitely a great book when you can fly through it and not even realize how many pages you’ve read, right? Thanks for the review!
