Though I was a bit disappointed with my first foray into Ian McEwan (Sweet Tooth), I’m looking forward to giving him another shot. The plot of The Children Act sounds like one of those very tough dilemmas that could happen in real life, which has me intrigued.
Plot Summary from Amazon
Fiona Maye is a leading High Court judge who presides over cases in the family court. She is renowned for her fierce intelligence, exactitude, and sensitivity. But her professional success belies private sorrow and domestic strife. There is the lingering regret of her childlessness, and now her marriage of thirty years is in crisis.
At the same time, she is called on to try an urgent case: Adam, a beautiful seventeen-year-old boy, is refusing for religious reasons the medical treatment that could save his life, and his devout parents echo his wishes. Time is running out. Should the secular court overrule sincerely expressed faith? In the course of reaching a decision, Fiona visits Adam in the hospital—and encounter that stirs long-buried feelings in her and powerful new emotions in the boy. Her judgment has momentous consequences for them both.
What book are you waiting for?
Oh yeah, Sweet Tooth wasn’t the best way to be introduced to Mr. McEwan. I really enjoyed The Children Act…it’s such a great story packed into a small space and shows all the talent he has as a writer. If you haven’t read Atonement (especially if you haven’t seen the movie yet, even though it’s great, too), you should definitely read it.
I’ve been meaning to go back and read Atonement…people said it was much better than Sweet Tooth! I’m glad to hear Children Act is better as well. And, yet another candidate for my Under 300 Pages list 🙂
Thanks for stopping by!
The ARC of this one is at the top of my reading pile. He is one great writer.
