This post is part of fellow book blogger, Beth Fish Reads‘, weekly meme (a “community” blog post, for all those non-bloggers out there) called Weekend Cooking.
Last weekend, our neighbors invited us over for a biscuits and sausage gravy brunch. As a Southerner living in the North, I couldn’t have been more excited for a taste of some down home Southern cooking! Mike, our neighbor, and a fellow Southerner, learned this recipe from his brothers. They made it on their camper stove in the infield of various NASCAR tracks (usually Bristol or Richmond) on race day morning.
While we couldn’t recreate the full experience…NASCAR and all…the biscuits and gravy were delicious and a yummy taste of home!
Long Brothers’ Race Day Biscuits with Sausage Gravy
Ingredients:
1 10oz. package of ground breakfast sausage (can substitute with spicy)
About 4 tablespoons of all purpose flour
About 2 1/2 cups of milk
8 buttermilk biscuits (out of a can or homemade, if you’re so inclined)
Directions:
Brown sausage in a large saucepan. Add flour, one tablespoon at a time while stirring. Let it cook for a minute or two, stirring often. Add milk slowly, about a half cup at a time, and stir to incorporate. Add milk until gravy is slightly runny (it will thicken as it cools). Bring to a boil and then simmer for a couple of minutes. Add salt and ground pepper to taste. If desired, add a pinch or two of red pepper flakes. Split biscuits in half and serve over top.
My Yankee colors are showing … I don’t think I’ve ever had biscuits with sausage gravy. Sounds like a good comfort food.
We were in Charlotte home of the NASCAR museum and drove by Bristol this week!!
My mother made these for special occasions. She was a northerner and hated the version of biscuits and gravy that she grew up with. But when she discovered white gravy with sausage, she thought it was the best thing ever!
I’ve never tried a dish like this though have seen it on all sorts of food shows. Do you leave the sausage in the pan as you are making the gravy? I could easily adapt this to using non-dairy milk. Thanks for sharing.
Yes – leave the sausage in the pan! Thanks for stopping by!
I can’t quite imagine what this tastes like… Cheers
my word, that could be the oddest dish I’ve ever heard of! LOL! but I bet it is yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmy
Boy, does that look tasty!
