First Chapter, First Paragraph Tuesday Intro (Girl Waits With Gun by Amy Stewart)

First Chapter First Paragraph

Every Tuesday, fellow blogger Bibliophile By the Sea hosts First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros, where bloggers share the first paragraph of the book they are currently reading or thinking about reading soon.

Girl Waits with Gun, Amy Stewart

I’m almost 30% of the way through this one and am honestly having trouble getting into it, despite the fact that it’s gotten mostly positive reviews. Has anyone read it? Does it pick up?

Plot Summary from Amazon

From the New York Times best-selling author of The Drunken Botanist comes an enthralling novel based on the forgotten true story of one of the nation’s first female deputy sheriffs.

Constance Kopp doesn’t quite fit the mold. She towers over most men, has no interest in marriage or domestic affairs, and has been isolated from the world since a family secret sent her and her sisters into hiding fifteen years ago. One day a belligerent and powerful silk factory owner runs down their buggy, and a dispute over damages turns into a war of bricks, bullets, and threats as he unleashes his gang on their family farm. When the sheriff enlists her help in convicting the men, Constance is forced to confront her past and defend her family — and she does it in a way that few women of 1914 would have dared.

Here’s the first paragraph:

Our troubles began in the summer of 1914, the year I turned thirty-five. The Archduke of Austria had just been assassinated, the Mexicans were revolting, and absolutely nothing was happening at our house, which explains why all three of us were riding to Paterson on the most trivial of errands. Never had a larger committee been convened to make a decision about the purchase of mustard powder and the replacement of a claw hammer whose handle had split from age and misuse.

Well…I just decided to DNF at 44%. Lots of domesticity for a book about one of the first female deputy sheriffs.

  4. I think the cover is eye-catching, but the intro didn’t do much for me. Thanks for sharing…and for visiting my blog.

The plot summary sounds like it should be good, and I love the cover, but the intro doesn’t really grab me. Hope it does get better!

  6. I enjoyed this one when I read it this past summer. It wasn’t quite what I expected, but I found it to be a fun read, even if a bit uneven at times. I think the fact that it’s based on real life people (even if the author did take a lot of liberties), made it even more interesting to me. I hope it picks up for you, Sarah.

  7. I haven’t read it and to be honest neither the intro nor the synopsis really appealed.

  8. I’m sorry I haven’t read this one yet. It’s on my list, but I haven’t gotten around to it. Since you are a third of the way through and have trouble, maybe I need to rethink reading this. I’ll wait until you finish – if you do finish. Good luck.

  11. I would definitely keep reading for a bit; I’ve been on the fence about this one and I’m curious to see how it pans out for you (if you finish!). It sounds like it has potential but…you know how that goes! 🙂

  12. There’s really something putting me off about this one. I don’t know if it’s the whole first female sheriff aspect or if it’s something else. Something makes me really want it to appeal to me, but it just doesn’t scream for me to add it to my TBR shelf or wish list.

I just DNF’d at 44%, but I think I’m in the minority. So don’t worry that it didn’t scream to be added to your TBR!
