This week, I’m linking up with Sheila at Book Journey for It’s Monday, What Are You Reading?
As I mentioned last week, I’m still participating in the posting portion of Nonfiction November, but have moved on with my reading. I’m well into “operation read as many 2014 books that everyone loved as possible before the end of the year”.
I recently finished…
The Boston Girl by Anita Diamant
This book was easy to read, but was completely unmemorable. I never figured out what the point of the story was.
I’m currently reading…
Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel
I’m almost halfway through this one and I’m completely shocked that I’m hooked on it. Post apocalypse themes are not usually in my wheelhouse, but I flew through my sample and didn’t hesitate for a second before buying the full book.

Next, I’m planning to try…
All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
I have this sample on my Kindle, but the fact that it’s almost 550 pages has kept me from giving it a go. I’m kind of in the mood to fly through shorter books right now! But, I will try the sample soon, I promise!
Florence Gordon by Brian Morton
I started a sample of this one a few weeks ago, but I wasn’t feeling it. I’m planning to give it one more shot…with a clear head this time.
An Untamed State by Roxanne Gay
I’ve had this one sitting on my Kindle for six months now! Shannon at River City Reading absolutely loved it, so I’m going to give it a try.
What are you reading?
Sorry to hear The Boston Girl didn’t work out for you. I have a copy, but might set it aside for something else since I haven’t heard anything too great about it yet.
I hope that An Untamed State goes well for you! It’s pretty tough to get through in the beginning, but the writing is amazing and it’s just such an important book.
I’m planning to give it a shot – we’ll see! I don’t mind tough to read, as long as it’s not boring!
Disappointed that The Boston Girl didn’t live up to expectations I had for it, maybe I’ll try to get it at the library instead of purchasing it. I read All The Light We Cannot See, and it was not a favorite. Beautifully written, but very slow moving. Florence Gordon is one I am interested in, and I’m also not a post-apocalyptic fan, but maybe I should try Station Eleven.
You’re not the first person I’ve heard that from about All the Light We Cannot See…hence why I’ve been avoiding it all year! And – I’m not at all into post apocalyptic, but love Station Eleven! I feel like the characters are just as flabbergasted by all that’s going on as I was as a reader, which made me much more able to identify with the story even though I don’t typically like that kind of stuff.
Sorry to hear The Boston Girl wasn’t your cup of tea. I recently read it and quite enjoyed it, even though it was not what I expected (I was thinking of something a bit more vast, like The Red Tent).
All the Light We Cannot See is wonderful…I hope you enjoy it!
Sarah, I remember when you posted a brief preview on Station Eleven and it sounded interesting then; now that you are hooked, I’m really interested! I’m so glad you’re enjoying it! I was very curious about All the Light We Cannot See until I repeatedly heard/read some disappointing reviews; decided against it, but I may be sorry…who knows!
I feel the same as you on All the Light We Cannot See…lots of raves, but some saying it’s “slow, but beautiful”…which I normally translate to mean “I’m supposed to like this book but it’s just not very entertaining”. Why I’ve been avoiding it..but I feel like I should at least try the sample since it’s not a huge commitment.
I loved Florence Gordon, and I thought The Boston Girl sounded good. To each her own! Thanks for sharing…and for visiting my blog.
Glad you are enjoying Station 11–my favorite book of 2014!
I’m almost done with it now and absolutely loved it! Thanks for the recommendation!
Just read a review on the Doerr book which sounds wonderful. Hope you enjoy all your reads. Have a good week.
I’ve heard good things about Station 11.
Have a great reading week,
