My Ten Latest Book Acquisitions & Tuesday Intro (Circling the Sun by Paula McClain)

Top Ten Tuesday
This week’s Top Ten Tuesday (hosted by The Broke and the Bookish) is another potential TBR list buster! I love/hate these types of categories…since I want to read all the books, but don’t have time to read all the books! The books below are on my Kindle and were either purchased or received from publishers. And, though it’s not on this list because I wrote it on Sunday, Go Set A Watchman will have arrived on my Kindle by the time this post goes live!

My Ten Latest Book Acquisitions

Top 10 Latest Book Acquisitions

After the Crash
by Michael Bussi (January 6, 2016 in the U.S.)
This novel about the mystery surrounding the lone survivor of a plane crash in the Alps is already a huge bestseller in Europe. Sounds a bit like Sarah Lotz’s The Three.

Best Boy by Eli Gottlieb (August 24, 2015)
I loved Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, so this story told through the eyes of an autistic adult appealed to me.

Bull Mountain by Brian Panowich (July 7, 2015)
I downloaded this one after reading Katie at Bookish Tendencies‘ glowing review.

Dare Me by Megan Abbott (July 31, 2012)
This was one of my vacation reads…a mini review is coming.

Days of Awe by Lauren Fox (August 4, 2015)
A “raw, achingly funny novel about a woman who, after the death of her best friend, must face the crisis in her marriage, the fury of her almost-teenage daughter, and the possibility that she might open her cantankerous heart to someone new.” (Goodreads)

Girl at War by Sara Novic (May 12, 2015)
The most recent book I finished reading.

Summerlong by Dean Bakopoulos (June 16, 2015)
A surprise hit for me that I downloaded for my July 4th vacation (my review).

The Gates of Evangeline by Hester Young (September 1, 2015)
A Southern Gothic debut starring a New York transplant who goes back to her Louisiana home. Family secrets, betrayal, you know the drill…

The Hopeful by Tracy O’Neill (June 9, 2015)
I downloaded this debut about a teen figure skating prodigy for vacation, but ended up putting it down.

The Last Days of Rabbit Hayes by Anna McPartlin (July 7, 2015)
I read the first few pages of this one, but ended up moving on to something else.

Tuesday Intro

First Chapter First Paragraph
Every Tuesday, fellow blogger Bibliophile By the Sea hosts First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros, where bloggers share the first paragraph of the book they are currently reading or thinking about reading soon.

Circling the Sun, Paula McClain

Plot Summary from Amazon (adapted for length)

Circling the Sun brings to life a fearless and captivating woman—Beryl Markham, a record-setting aviator caught up in a passionate love triangle with safari hunter Denys Finch Hatton and Karen Blixen, who as Isak Dinesen wrote the classic memoir Out of Africa.

Here’s the first paragraph of the Prologue (from an uncorrected proof):

September 4, 1936

Abingdon, England

The Vega Gull is peacock blue with silver wings, more splendid than any bird I’ve known and somehow mine to fly. She’s called The Messenger, and has been designed and built with great care and skill to do what should be impossible – cross an ocean in one brace launch, thirty-six hundred miles of black chop and nothingness – and to take me with her.

Would you keep reading?

  1. You have a few books I’m really looking forward to, especially Best Boy and Days of Awe (they’re library holds for me!). Definitely curious what you’ll think of Bull Mountain…it reels you in pretty quick!

  2. I have Best Boy and Days of Awe both waiting for me to get to in the coming days/weeks! I’m PUMPED because Lauren Fox is from Milwaukee and apparently Days of Awe takes place on the east side, where I lived for several years during undergrad and after. She is doing a book signing and reading on her pub day at a local independent book store, so obviously I have to go. It will be my first author event, so we’ll see how it goes!

  5. Nice list of books! I loved Dare Me and hope to get to Best Boy soon. I’m on the fence about Go Set a Watchman.

I think a lot of people are on the fence 🙂 Sadly, Dare Me was a bit disappointing for me, but I loved The Fever.

You’ve got several books that I want to try. After The Crash, Summerlong, The Hopeful, and I love the teaser for Circling The Sun. I don’t know what it is about that one, but I’ve been interested in it since I first heard of it – several months ago.

It’s fiction based on the real life Beryl Markham…kind of a badass lady so far!

  8. So many good books! I do like the look of Circling the Sun – and it reminds me that I haven’t read Out of Africa yet. I started it a while ago and had to put it aside to finish other books!

I haven’t read Out of Africa either! But I remember my mom talking about it a long time ago…maybe that was about the movie?

  9. I enjoyed The Paris Wife, so I have been contemplating this one. I don’t know if I would enjoy it, since the setting does not appeal to me. Thanks for sharing.

It’s different than The Paris Wife, but I’m enjoying it much more than I thought I would (I wasn’t super excited about the premise, but wanted to give it a shot since I loved The Paris Wife so much).

Lots of great stuff there! I’m particularly curious about After the Crash, I’ve had it on my list for a while, but haven’t read many reviews. I’ve also got Best Boy and Bull Mountain in the queue, so look forward to your thoughts.

I haven’t read any reviews of After the Crash either…I heard about it at the Speed Dating event at BEA and it sounded interesting! Sounds like lots of people are planning on reading Best Boy and Bull Mountain as well.

  19. What a great collection! I’m really looking forward to reading Bull Mountain later this week. I didn’t find Days of Awe “funny” but more snarky in defense or coping. I would keep reading Circling the Sun. The writing looks to be beautiful and poetic.

Regarding the first paragraph of Circling the Sun: I always sort of groan when authors put words into famous people’s mouths. But I’m a huge fan of Beryl Markham and Isak Dinesen too so I will likely read this book soon.

  21. That opening paragraph says a lot about the character that I like. I have this my name on the long holds-list at the library for this book. I sure hope everyone in front of me reads fast.

    Posted 7.14.15 Reply
  22. I’m so tempted by Bull Mountain! I looks verrry good but I’m worried about female characters, so I’ll probably sit on it until more reviews come in.

Also, Best Boy looks intriguing and I must now check it out. 🙂

    Posted 7.14.15 Reply
  23. Sarah, I really want to read Days of Awe!! I’m so excited that you have a copy; can’t wait to hear how it goes for you. I think Circling the Sun sounds like a great selection; I hope it is interesting!

  24. What a great mix of reading! I tried to get to the author event for Brian Panowich last week but had my grandson and didn’t think a 4 year old would enjoy this particular genre 😉 He’s coming back to Atlanta the end of August/beginning of September so I hope to meet him there + pick up the book. It sounds wonderful – maybe by then you will have read it and can share if its a must buy or not.

I’m about 3/4 done with Circling the Sun ~ that beginning is something isn’t it? I could feel my heart in my throat as the plane is headed toward the water. Hope you are enjoying it!

  25. I like the intro you shared. I’m hesitant though about that particular book, not having been able to get through her last one.

From you list, so many of the titles look like they will be good. Bull Mountain in particular caught my attention. And Summerlong.

If you couldn’t finish The Paris Wife, I’d probably skip this one. Same style, though a very different subject matter.

And – I’m starting Bull Mountain as soon as I finish GSAW…hopefully in the next few days!

  26. I don’t know anything about Bull Mountain, but I want to read it!! Everyone seems to like it (everyone being maybe 2 people). I’m sold already. All of the covers of the books you’ve acquired are pretty. Good work.
