My mother-in-law is not a fan of “fishy” fish, so we were discussing different types of fish she might like over dinner one night. She mentioned that salmon is generally too fishy for her, so I suggested arctic char as a substitute. It’s a bit flakier than salmon and still has a strong flavor (so can stand up to some fun accompaniments), but is less “fishy”. A few nights later, my mother-in-law made this arctic char recipe from allrecipes.com that was absolutely delicious (and simple).
Oh My Arctic Char from Allrecipes.com
Serves 2
Ingredients
1 10 oz fillet arctic char, rinsed and patted dry
1 pinch sea salt to taste
1 lime, zested and juiced
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup sherry wine
3 sprigs rosemary, leaves stripped
2 cloves garlic
Ground black pepper to taste
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (or to taste)
Directions
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Line a baking dish with aluminum foil.
Season arctic char with salt, place in prepared baking dish, and sprinkle with lime zest.
Combine lime juice, olive oil, sherry, rosemary, and garlic in a food processor; pulse until garlic is finely chopped. Spread mixture over fish and season with black pepper and cayenne pepper.
Bake in the preheated oven until fish flakes easily with a fork, 12 to 15 minutes, basting with pan juices about halfway through. When the fish is close to being cooked, switch the oven to broil for remaining two minutes or until browned.
We have found that Keta salmon (which I get at Trader Joe’s) is much less fishy than regular salmon.
I’ve never heard of Keta – will have to check that out!
We love salmon and don’t find it too fishy but we’re always looking for other fish we like. This looks so simple — I’ll have to see if Wegman’s sells this.
This does sound delicious! I have been putting more fish in my diet this year, in fact that is the plan for tonight’s dinner. I will have to try this one!
I really don’t like salmon (and I’ve really really tried!) so I like the idea of trying Arctic Char as a substitute. Thanks for sharing!
I think I like salmon but hubby doesn’t, so we never have it at home! I’ve never heard of arctic char, but that recipe looks and sounds delicious!
I don’t think I’ve ever had Arctic Char. It sounds good!
My husband doesn’t like a strong fish either, this recipe looks like one I should try. Thanks for sharing.
i’ve never thought of using Arctic char as a substitute for salmon. I’ll have to pick it up some time.
I have never had artic char but we love fish for dinner, must try this one. Looks healthy too!
I’m another who has never had Arctic char, don’t know if we can get it here, but the recipe sounds very good and simple, and would probably work with perhaps mahimahi or ono (Wahoo).
I eat a lot of salmon – it’s a good idea to change things up a bit, though. This Arctic char recipe looks good!
I love fish, especially salmon or trout, and don’t find anything too fishy. My mother says she doesn’t like fish being “too fishy” too. I don’t know that we have Arctic Char in Australia- at least I’ve never heard of it. Your dinner looks tasty though- and that spice crust sounds great and would work with all sorts of fish I would think.
I’m not very comfortable cooking fish (mostly because I’m not comfortable buying it) but this looks simple and delicious!
Salmon can be a little “fishy”, especially some the varieties caught in Lake Ontario. I just discovered Arctic Char a year or two ago. Will give this recipe a try!
I haven’t heard of Arctic Char…or Keta. I don’t go to Trader Joe’s often but I might have to make a trip to see if I can find one of these. I need to start introducing fish into our diets. :-/
