Top Ten Recent Adds to My TBR List

Top to Recent Adds to My TBR List

Delicious Foods by James Hannaham (March 17, 2015)
Jennifer @ The Relentless Reader’s comments about this novel about a woman who tries to recover from her husband’s death by joining a mysterious company that runs a farm (yep, this does sound totally weird) got me interested…

Eight Hundred Grapes by Laura Dave (June 2, 2015)
I read a sample of this novel about Georgia Ford, a young woman who returns to her family’s Sonoma vineyard after discovering her fiancé has been keeping a secret, in NetGalley’s Spring/Summer Buzz Books and I loved Georgia’s voice…

Lavina by Mary Marcus (April 28, 2015)
This novel about a woman returning home to Louisiana after living in NYC was on Ashley @ Chronicles’ Spring TBR List…and I love me some Southern fiction!

Mosquitoland by David Arnold (March 3, 2015)
Jennifer @ The Relentless Reader’s daughter reviewed this YA novel about a road trip…and totally convinced me to add it to my TBR list immediately…

Our Endless Numbered Days by Claire Fuller (March 17, 2015)
After reading numerous great reviews of this debut novel about an eight year old girl who is taken to live in the woods by her father (after telling her the rest of the world has been destroyed), it was Allison at The Book Wheel’s that pushed me to finally add it to my TBR list.

Pretty Ugly by Kirker Butler (March 31, 2015)
A satire about a dysfunctional Southern family including a child beauty queen and her stage mom, written by the writer of the TV show “Family Guy”.

Smoke: How A Small-town Girl Accidentally Wound Up Smuggling 7,000 Pounds of Marijana with the Pot Princess of Beverly Hills by Meili Cady (March 24, 2015)
Tara at Running N Reading recommended this memoir that she described as “combining the excess of The Bling Ring with the intimacy of Blow and the charm of Catch Me If You Can”.

The Bullet by Mary Louise Kelly (March 17, 2015)
Tara at Running N Reading (seems her recommendations are dominating this list!) raved about this thriller about an adult woman who is shocked to find she has a bullet stuck in her skull…even though she’s never been shot.

The Sound of Glass by Karen White (May 12, 2015)
I loved Karen White’s Tradd Street series and had no idea she had a new book coming out until I saw it on Ashley at Chronicles’ Spring TBR list.

The Wives of Los Alamos by Tarashea Nesbit (February 24, 2014)
I recently listened to the Books on the Nightstand podcast’s playback of Tarashea Nesbit talking about her novel at Booktopia and, though this book is fiction, it’s based on the true story of the families of those working on the top secret “Manhattan Project” (aka building the atomic bomb).

Tuesday Intro

First Chapter First Paragraph

Every Tuesday, fellow blogger Bibliophile By the Sea hosts First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros, where bloggers share the first paragraph of the book they are currently reading or thinking about reading soon.

Where They Found Her, Kimberly McCreight
It’s been awhile since I’ve read a thriller and, at halfway through, I’m totally into this one! There are a ton of moving parts to keep track of, which is keeping me guessing. Plus, it kind of involves a college and a high school…both settings that I’m a sucker for!

Plot Summary from Amazon

At the end of a long winter in well-to-do Ridgedale, New Jersey, the body of a newborn is found in the woods fringing the campus of the town’s prestigious university. No one knows the identity of the baby, what ended her very short life, or how she came to be found among the fallen leaves. But for the residents of Ridgedale, there is no shortage of opinions.

When freelance journalist and recent Ridgedale transplant Molly Sanderson is unexpectedly called upon to cover the disturbing news for the Ridgedale Reader—the town’s local paper—she has good reason to hesitate. A severe depression followed the loss of her own baby, and this assignment could unearth memories she has tried hard to bury. But the disturbing history Molly uncovers is not her own. Her investigation reveals a decades-old trail of dark secrets hiding behind Ridgedale’s white picket fences.

Here’s the first paragraph of the Prologue (this quote is from an uncorrected proof):

It isn’t until afterward that I think about the bag or the bloody towels stuffed inside. They’re too big to bury, but I can’t just leave them behind. Maybe I should have been better prepared. Thought more about the details. But it’s hard to be ready for something you never imagined you’d do.

What do you think? Would you keep reading?

I would definitely keep reading because it started with something sinister going on, plus that premise…I hope it delivers big time because I would love to read it.

Oh, you’ve got several books on your list that I want to read. Really want to try that Los Alamos book, although I’ve heard that it is written in a unique manner. And The Bullet – soon, soon. Love that you are enjoying the McCreight book. Again, soon, soon. That first paragraph is a doozy!
