What I’m Reading Now (9/28/20)

what I'm reading now

Last week was a doozy. I couldn’t really concentrate on anything and my reading suffered. Until Friday…I checked out a bit and finished a couple books over the weekend, which felt good. And, a couple of these books blew me away!

Podcast

There was no new podcast last week.

This week will be a full length episode on Libraries & COVID-19 with Kelly Jensen of Book Riot.

I finished reading…

what I'm reading now

Deacon King Kong by James McBride (March 3, 2020)
Mixed feelings on this one. Great start, but totally dragged through the middle. I’m also not sure if this was a victim of not being able to concentrate on much of anything this week. I’ll be sharing my more detailed thoughts on an upcoming bonus episode for podcast patrons (click here to support the podcast on Patreon).

Memorial Drive by Natasha Tretheway (July 28, 2020)
In her memoir, Tretheway shares the story of her mother’s murder by Tretheway’s stepfather and how she struggled with this tragedy. This memoir is absolutely stunning. 5 enthusiastic stars! I’ll be sharing my more detailed thoughts on an upcoming bonus episode for podcast patrons (click here to support the podcast on Patreon).

Eat a Peach by David Chang (September 8, 2020) – AUDIOBOOK
Possibly the best chef memoir I’ve ever read / listened to. Chang is different and his memoir is different. It’s about so much more than being a chef. I’ll be sharing my more detailed thoughts on an upcoming bonus episode for podcast patrons (click here to support the podcast on Patreon).

I’m currently reading…

Group by Christie Tate

Group by Christie Tate (October 27, 2020)
I’m only one chapter in, but this “therapy nonfiction” (as I referred to it on the Fall 2020 Book Preview) captured my interest immediately. The opening paragraphs are eye-opening as Tate recounts having suicidal thoughts amid finding out she was ranked #1 in her law school class.

Upcoming reading plans…

This one keeps getting pushed back by library holds & shorter books that take less concentration. I’d like to swear it’s gonna happen this week, but I thought the same thing last week…

The Searcher

The Searcher by Tana French (October 6, 2020)
Though French’s previous book, The Witch Elm, started slowly, but I ended up loving it. The Searcher is another standalone novel from her. But, a part of me is also nervous about attempting a 500 page book that will likely start slowly…even if I know it will get twisty eventually.

Interesting looking assortment of books. I’ve read none of them since I try to avoid nonfiction. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  2. You just keep adding books to my TBR. First Memorial Drive and now Eat a Peach. The BEST chef memoir is a high accolade indeed!

I only finished 1 book last week. I’m reading a nonfiction book which always takes longer than reading fiction.
