What I’m Reading Now (9/16/19)

what I'm reading now

My reading was on opposite ends of the spectrum last week…I sort of reversed the proper order of an Alcohol & Advil pairing. But, I really liked both books!

Podcast

Episode 29, the first mini episode (book recommendations only) featuring Katie Fulton (@katieneedsabiggerbookshelf) aired last Wednesday!

And, a new full length episode will air this Wednesday…Deb and Amy from the Bless Your Heart Book Club talk Southern books!

I finished reading…

Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson book cover

Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson (October 29, 2019)
An outrageous premise that actually worked! Sweet, but not annoyingly so. Mini review to come.

I’m currently reading…

Only Plane in the Sky by Garrett Graff book cover

The Only Plane in the Sky by Garrett Graff (September 10, 2019)
Absolutely extraordinary. And, devastating. I’ve read over 250 pages…we’ll see if I can make it through the rest without crumbling.

Upcoming reading plans…

Lock Every Door by Riley Sager

Lock Every Door by Riley Sager (July 2, 2019)
I didn’t love Sager’s Final Girls, but am giving him a second shot because I’ve heard his third book is really different from his first two. It’s a library hold, so low risk! And, I’m hoping this one will be the Advil I will most definitely need after The Only Plane in the Sky.

I plan on reading the Wilson book, just as soon as I get a chance (ha!). I haven’t read any 9/11 books *at all* — not sure why, but I haven’t been drawn to them. Maybe I’m still saturated from all the emotions of the actual day?

  2. I so disliked The Family Fang that I don’t know that I could ever read another Kevin Wilson book! I feel similarly about Riley Sager after The Last Time I Lied, but admit I’m curious about Lock Every Door. I’ll wait to see what you think on that one. I do want to read The Only Plane in the Sky. I just need to get in the right head space to do it because I feel so sad just thinking about it.

Unfortunately, I was very disappointed in Lock Every Door. It kinda dragged along and was never very interesting or exciting for me. 2 stars for me- it would have been a DNF if I ever allowed myself to do that!

  5. Kevin Wilson spoke at SIBA and was so funny without really meaning to be. That story has been stewing in his brain for a while an I’m anxious to read it.

i just finished listening to the 9/11 book…so very good. I also read Rise and Fall, another book on 9/11. The personal stories are a very powerful way to re-tell an event that we thought we knew.

Riley Sagar is so hit or miss for me. I thought Lock Every Door was just okay. I finished it, but it’s not like I’m walking around telling everyone “YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK!” The 9/11 book looks so good.
